About the Author

R. J. McBride lives in Minnesota with his wife and their two inquisitive love birds, Tinker and Belle.

He first developed Freemont as a cartoon character who appeared in an Oregon Coast newspaper and on T-shirts.

But Freemont had a bigger story to tell, and Temple of the Rainbow is just the beginning of a series of books for young and old alike.

Temple of the Rainbow Featured Character
HaKata

HaKata, the evil ruler of Ahtam-Sar Arriving from no one knew where or how, and professing an all-knowing, all-seeing presence, HaKata convinced us he had superior powers granted him by the Great Panar, the Creator of all life. Ruling for personal gain, HaKata brought merciless changes to our world, renamed Ahtam-Sar, which HaKata told us meant "The Chosen Ones." Hardships were advance payment for reaching Om-Hadra, the Eternal Frog Heaven. Only through unquestioning obedience to the "Grand One," would we find real freedom in the afterlife. It was believed to be truth at its highest, yet it did little to change our miserable existence."

Temple of the Rainbow,
Chapter 3—HaKata

What is it that fills this character's heart with such darkness, that makes him so cold-hearted and evil? In a word, fear. HaKata rules with terror and sheer force of will because his greatest fear is losing the power to make others serve his desires. Lesser traits of greed, lust, anger, vanity, and attachment show what these five deadly passions can create when one's life is consumed by power alone.

To one degree or another, HaKata's character reflects what lies within all of us, yet most do not allow these lesser passions to fuel their lives. Those who live with acceptance, compassion, and service to others show that love is always stronger than power.

The name HaKata is derived from combining "Tahake," the name of a flightless bird from the rainforests of New Zealand with the word "Darkside"—Tahake, symbolizing the loss of freedom to rise above one's own self and"Darkside" for the character's obvious cruelty and selfishness.

HaKata's appearance is fashioned after an Argentina Horned Toad—extra-sharp teeth, an oversized head and mouth, and a bodacious appetite to match. Sinister, spiteful, and greedy, this brocaded beanbag of a character will challenge anyone and eat anything or anyone in his way. In short, one very bad dude!
